Free Pawn 1

Who doesn’t like free stuff? A “free pawn” is an unprotected pawn that can be captured without any risk. Often, an opponent will leave a pawn unprotected, providing you with an opportunity to gain a material advantage.

In many tactical exercises, we focus on winning minor and major pieces, but pawns are just as important. Capturing an extra pawn can make a big difference later in the game, especially if that pawn can be promoted in the endgame.

Capturing a free pawn not only grants material advantage but can also strengthen your position by increasing pressure on your opponent. Your extra pawn can play important defensive and offensive roles.

What do you have to do?

Check if an opponent’s pawn is unprotected and whether you can capture it safely.
