A new color, that means new lessons! To truly understand chess there is still an incredible amount to discover. One new term that you are going to encounter a great deal on the bronze level is 'combination'.

The term 'combination' is used a lot in chess books. Actually it is a collective term for all kinds of tricks. A general characteristic of combinations is several themes are 'combined'. For example, in a combination you can sometimes apply a pin and a double attack at the same time. Another typical aspect of combinations is that a player temporarily invests material, but has calculated that the investment will be paid back with interest within a few moves.

A successful combination almost always leads to material gain.
