Mate Monster: Lawnmower mate (2)

Now that you have mastered the rook and queen lawmower mate, it is time for a new monster trick: the lawnmower mate with two rooks!

Study examples 1 and 2 to learn how to do set up this mate.

Example 1 shows how the king is mated in het end.
Example 2 explains how to get there step-by-step.

A lawnmower mate with two rooks is very similar to the lawnmower mate with a queen and a rook. Yet, there is one important difference.

Have a look at example 3.

With two rooks, you need to be careful. If the king is close to the rooks, checking the king is not a good idea. To make the lawnmower mate work, you may have to move the rook(s) away from the king.

Example 4 explains this.

What do you have to do?

Deliver a lawnmower mate. Alternate between the rooks and roll back the black king. Gradually cut off all escape paths.
Make sure the king cannot take your rooks. Simply transfer them to the other side of the board if the king is close.
