King and queen mate - king on the edge (1)

To win in chess, you must be able to give checkmate. A very common mate is the king and queen mate.  

You have had some practice with this type of mate in the Pawn-level (the River). Remember? To checkmate a king with just your king and queen, you opponent’s king must be on the edge of the board.

Have a look at the example:

The first step is to trap the king on the side of the board with your queen. Make sure the king cannot escape from the edge.

Next, it is time to bring in a friend. Your queen can’t checkmate all by herself. Move up the king step by step until it is close enough to protect the queen. Then you can checkmate with the queen.
