Defend against checkmate: mix

In a game of chess, no one is going to tell what you should do to defend against checkmate. You have to figure it out yourself.
That’s why, in this lesson, we give you a short recap of all the defensive tricks you have learned so far. It is up to you to decide which method you use.

The example shows all possibilities in one chess position. Just have a look at it.

Always look for the main ways of defending:

  • Moving away
  • Protecting (mating square)
  • Capturing
  • Blocking or interposing

Consider all options. Then pick the best. The exercises will help you master this. Try to use the same method of thinking in a real game of chess. You will be able to escape from checkmate more often than you used to be!
