Defend against checkmate: blocking

Blocking or interposing as a means to defend is not new to you. You block an attack by moving a piece in between the attacker and the attacked piece. You can also use this technic to prevent mate. One of your pieces moves between the attacker and the mating square.

Study example 1.

Don’t be reckless when blocking. Make sure you move your piece to a safe spot.
Have a look at example 2. White has three different ways of blocking a mating attack. But only one of them is good.

What do you have to do?
Defend against checkmate by placing a piece between the attacker and the mating square. Make sure your piece is well protected.
