Zwischenzug

A Zwischenzug or intermezzo is a forcing move that is played in the middle of a combination. The literal translation of both Zwischenzug (German) and intermezzo (Italian) is ‘in-between move’ or ‘intermediate move’. Its purpose is to frustrate the opponent’s defense. The Zwischenzug is usually unexpected and helps to make a combination successful.

Typical examples of Zwischenzugs are checks, captures and attacks. By means of these forcing moves, you can save one of your own pieces without the loss of time. Your opponent has no way of defending against the combination afterwards.

What do you have to do?
