Defense: protecting your pieces (1)
Make sure that your pieces cannot be captured. Is one of your pieces under attack? Time for some defensive action!
An attacked piece can be defended in four ways:
Moving away: you move the attacked piece to a safe square
Blocking: you place another piece between the attacking piece and the piece that’s being attacked. This is also called interposing.
Capturing: you take the attacking piece.
Protecting: you protect the piece that is under attack. After a capture, you can strike back.
What do you have to do?
Protect an attacked piece. Start by finding the hanging piece (the piece that is at risk). Then, figure out how to guard this piece with another piece. This is a good way to avoid material loss.
